UrVAMM develops a pioneer method for environmental monitoring within cities. A technology (Cated-NanoEnvi) is being developed to integrate in council vehicles (e.g. buses, refuse collectors and other municipal service vehicles) with two fundamental objectives: the monitoring in motion of the quality of air and the reduction of emissions by means of efficient driving through the use of the technology itself.

UrVAMM contemplates that the gathered information is available in an accessible, open and 'friendly' way, in line with the Open Data initiatives for the exploitation by the government and also by citizens. This approach will offer the so-called Smart Cities valuable data, enabling local authorities to define policies and strategies based on knowledge and information.

UrVAMM is being designed and tested with Government funding and the collaboration of bus fleets in Gijón, Valencia and currently with the involvement of the city of Oslo. The project is being financed by the Spanish Government within the project TSI- 100502-2013 -36, titled 'UrVAMM, integrated platform in urban vehicles for the control of the quality of air' and the Government of the Principality of Asturias within the project 'Development and Integration of nanosensors for the Measurement of Atmospheric Quality Integrated in vehicles in Motion'.
